Physical Education

At Darley Churchtown we work towards the common goal that all pupils leave our school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle, with lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

We introduce our children to a wide range of sports in the hope that every child will find the sport for them.

Through our planned and sequenced curriculum, we aim to:

  • Build upon physical literacy within the Early Years;
  • Develop a whole school approach to the teaching of PE and sport;.
  • Make PE and sport enjoyable and accessible for all;
  • Embed the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills needed to succeed in PE and sport, with its benefits across the whole curriculum (not just in Early Years);
  • Improve standards of achievement in PE and sport;
  • Promote physical exercise and healthy-lifestyle choices.

Staff use the teaching materials from The PE Hub to ensure our learning is appropriate and challenging for all.

Swimming

At Darley Churchtown we believe all children should be competent swimmers by the time they leave us at the end of Year 6. We take all key stage 2 children swimming for 30 weeks a year at our fantastic local leisure centre, The Arc, meaning pupils will have four years of swimming lessons while they are at the school. This promotes fitness, gives children a valuable skill they can use throughout their lives and promotes safe and responsible behaviour around open water.
